Bungie's Challenged Action Game Marathon Shows Signs of Life

The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's much-anticipated project, has reared its head again with the announcement of a exclusive testing phase set to run later this month.

A Rocky Development Journey

First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game has undergone a tumultuous development cycle. In October 2024, the developer announced it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. This was followed by quiet months, until the game was re-revealed in April with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing led to negative feedback, the studio announced in June that it was postponing the game's launch.

Avoiding Past Mistakes

Though Marathon has already encountered its portion of issues, the development team appears committed to make certain their project avoids the same outcome as other games. Currently, it appears the game's development is moving forward again, as Bungie just disclosed that it has conducted multiple private tests to collect player input on Marathon" since this past summer. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, allowing more players to catch a glimpse of the game via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Exclusive Testing Information

Considering it's a closed testing phase, it's naturally limited access than, for example, an public test. To participate in the technical test — which runs from October 22nd to Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. PDT — participants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Apply via their platform
  • Live in Europe or North America
  • Own a PS5, Xbox console, or compatible computer (system requirements include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
  • Participate in the official Discord server
  • Complete confidentiality agreement via the Discord server

How to Apply

Registration is currently available, and to be eligible for the private trial, players must complete registration by the October 16th deadline. Players on Windows PC can also register via Steam starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by October 26th. The developer will contact players who qualify and inform them of the next steps.

"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we evaluate enhancements since Marathon's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, prox chat, re-tuned combat pacing, solo queue, enhanced narrative elements, and additional features," Bungie said. "However, the Technical Test build is a development build and will only include a selection of what's planned for the game's full release, focused on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

Additional details about the private trial and the game itself can be located on Marathon's support section. But for individuals who aren't selected for the trial (or cannot participate), there's still good news: Bungie says a official announcement on the state of the game is the following item on the agenda once the test is over.

"There will be a comprehensive report on the game's progress in the near future after the private testing phase!" Bungie shared.
